Hey Oppo, I live in San Francisco now and at a place without parking and the closest free parking is 1.0+ miles away on the street I decided to leave my FoST at my parents. So now here I am paying $500 a month if you count insurance for a car to just sit.

Up here in SF all I use is public transportation and thats getting a little old but i’m also not about to bring my FoST and have to take a bus or a 30 minute walk to use it. On top of that i’ll have to move it every few days because street cleaners come every week and you will get ticketed if you don’t move.

Near where I live there is motorcycle parking for a few bucks a day so probably $100 a month, and i’ve talked to my parents about it they said I could sell my car for a motorcycle if I want to. If I do sell my car I will be paying about $100 a month in payments for a bike, $100 for parking, and maybe $100 for insurance(i don’t count gas it will be like $20). If I end up with a bike I should be saving at least $200 a month and I will be able to move around freely.

The only downside to bike will be wearing all the gear and sometimes finding parking at school will be a pain. Ultimately my question to Oppo is how is a bike in a city like San Francisco, should I continue paying $500 a month for my car and use public transportation or should I sell my car and use public transit when I need it otherwise ride my bike? Also the bike would be a Yamaha FZ-07 if anyone was wondering. I’d only have the bike while in school after that i’ll purchase a car.

I live in SF (in SOMA) and I wouldn’t ride my bike here. Too many terrible drivers. I would probably join ZipCar. When I was younger and couldn’t really afford city parking that’s what I used.

SF is scary for cyclists, even with the considerate bike lanes. If you want to park in more places for you FoST, get commercial plates. Easiest way to park in yellow zones. Took me around 4 hours with the DMV, but yeah. It’s not worth it parking anyways in SF unless you have a personal spot. There are some awesome roads around SF, but there’s no point in going “James May and his Rolls Royce that is parked 30 miles away in a rented shed” in SF.

Perhaps you should invest in a Smart car. As it can be vaguely defined as a “station wagon” (remove the back seats, if they exist” and commercial plates can be attained. And plus you can give no shits about it whatsoever. You may hate it, but it will get you around.

You will be murdered if you have a Bike. San Francisco is home to the highest number of incompetant nerds in the country. They’re busy wishing for autonomous cars while running over pedestrians and motorcyclists. Get a Smart Car and rent it out on GetAround.com / Relayrides.com. You’ll end up positive $$$ and still have a set of wheels that you can easily schedule without restraints.

Too far to ride a bicycle?

My wife was hit by a cab head-on in SF on her bike.

I’d just stick with public transportation. MUNI sucks dick, but owning a car or bike while living downtown is probably worse. Between the whole UBER/taxis/scoot not giving a shit, the one-way streets, and the rough roads, you’ll probably be happier commuting by bus/metro and using Zipcar/Lyft/Uber for those times where you have to travel by car.

With that said, have you taken a look at the lots in the SOMA area? I think some of the lots there do monthly parking. You might be able to talk your way into a decent rate if you absolutely must have a car/bike.

I live in the outer sunset. While it isn’t the most glamorous SF neighborhood, I rarely worry about parking. I work near SFO and If I were to take muni and bart, it would take me over 90 minutes to get to work. When I visit hipper neighborhoods like the mission or pac heights, I always notice how much it would suck trying to get anywhere regardless of your mode of transportation.

This reminds me of why I even rejected jobs much further south on the peninsula. That entire metro region is extremely difficult to live in if you’re not completely invested in the lifestyle. The only people I’ve known in the SF Metro that had endurable car situations lived in Berkeley (when they went to Cal) or in SFHs I couldn’t realistically afford around Silicon Valley. It basically knocked the area off my list unless I could make enough to afford the Silicon Valley or Marin County lifestyles. Hence, I live in the greater Seattle metro where I don't even suffer traffic on my drive to work.
